Henrik Shipstead, the first native of Kandiyohi County elected to the U.S. Senate, was born here in Burbank Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, on January 8, 1881, one of Norwegian immigrants Saave and Christine Ellefson Shipstead's twelve children. He attended New London Public Schools, St. Cloud Minnesota State Teachers College and Northwestern College, graduating in 1903 with a degree in dentistry. He practiced dentistry in Glenwood and Minneapolis until 1920, then built a political career that began in Glenwood, where he served on the Charter Commission, as mayor, and in the Minnesota State House of Representatives. In 1922, he became the first Farmer-Labor Party candidate elected to the United States Senate and served four consecutive terms from 1922 to 1946. He died on June 25, 1966.
