The MA & PA station between Bel Air and Forest Hill was first called Melrose, but after a request to the railroad's president to name it Blake's because it stood next to John Blake's farm, the railroad instead chose Bynum for the nearby stream crossed by the line. Bynum thereafter appeared on the railroad's 1884 timetable. Along with serving local passengers, the station shipped Spenceola Farms brand canned products to market in Baltimore.
