Douglas Mountain, the highest point of land for several hundred square miles, offers wide views of the surrounding region, including Mount Washington and the White Mountains on the western horizon and, on some days, the Atlantic to the east. For generations, visitors have enjoyed its beauty and solitude. In 1925, Dr. William Blackman contributed the land and funding, and several local residents were instrumental in having the tower built so visitors could enjoy the panoramic scene. At the summit, a large boulder bears the inscription non sibi, sed omnibus, meaning "not for one, but for all," a philosophy that continues today. The 169-acre Douglas Mountain preserve is owned and managed by the Town of Sebago, with local stewards, community volunteers, and children from Sebago Elementary School helping maintain the preserve, its trails, and fundraising for this granite vista, as the citizens of Sebago hope people will continue to enjoy the hill and its spectacular display.
