Black Nubble is a mountain in western Maine near Mount Redington, within the Kennebec River watershed. Water from its slopes reaches the Gulf of Maine through Nash Stream, the Dead River, and the Sandy River system. In recent history, the mountain became the focus of a disputed wind power proposal. In 2005, Maine Mountain Power sought approval for a 30-turbine wind farm on Black Nubble and Mount Redington, but the plan was rejected in 2007 after extended public debate. A smaller 18-turbine proposal for Black Nubble alone was also denied in 2008, leaving the mountain chiefly known as part of Maine’s natural landscape.
