Muckshaw Ponds in Fredon Township, New Jersey, are three interconnected limestone sinkhole ponds within the 534-acre Muckshaw Pond Preserve, managed by the Ridge and Valley Conservancy. Along with their geological importance, they are linked to local Revolutionary War lore. Tradition holds that Lieutenant James Moody, a British Loyalist, used the area as a hideout and that he and his gang concealed gems and jewels in nearby caves. According to the legend, they were captured before they could return to recover the treasure, giving the ponds a lasting place in both the natural and folkloric history of the region.
