The CCC was created in 1933 to provide young men useful work during the Depression, and Camp Canyon Creek (Company 1231) was established in 1937. The CCC built numerous facilities including district offices, the John Day Compound, fire guard stations, lookout towers, campgrounds, and other improvements. The John Day Administrative Site was the most ambitious project constructed by the CCC on the Malheur N.F., and the site was listed in 1986 on the National Register of Historic Places. Under the supervision of the US Army and the US Forest Service, the contributions of the CCC's young men are still found throughout the Malheur National Forest.
