F.H. Ball of Foxburg, Pennsylvania, patented improvements to valve gears in steam engines on March 23, 1875. These improvements created a steam-tight valve that would always remain so. A new reverse movement was devised for reversing engine power from the derrick to the sectional balance wheel. At the time, these improvements rendered the engine superior to all others for use in the petroleum industry.
