Hunter Mountain, in the central Catskills south of the village of Hunter, is Greene County’s highest peak and the second-highest in the Catskills. Best known for a ski area on Colonel’s Chair, it is largely undeveloped, with its true summit marked by a fire tower and its waters feeding both regional rivers and New York City reservoirs. Once called Greenland Mountain, it was renamed for John Hunter in the mid-19th century and was once thought to be the Catskills’ highest peak. Heavy tanning-era bark harvests, logging, and fires reshaped its forests before much of the mountain was added to the Forest Preserve and protected as “forever wild.”
