Glacier Peak is a 9,495-foot mountain near the center of Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains, within the Eagle Cap Wilderness. It is distinguished by its sharp relief, rising about 3,100 feet above Eagle Creek in less than a mile, and its slopes drain both east to the West Fork Wallowa River and west to the East Fork Eagle Creek. Benson Glacier lies on its north side, a permanent snowfield remaining from the much larger Wallowa Glacier that carved the West Fork Wallowa River canyon during the late Pleistocene. The peak consists of granodiorite in the Wallowa Batholith and stands in a subarctic climate with severe winters and mild summers.
