Monrovia Peak is a 5,412-foot summit in Southern California’s San Gabriel Mountains, about four miles northeast of Monrovia and roughly 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Its significance lies in its steep local prominence: although moderate by Sierra standards, it rises more than 1,800 feet above Cold Springs Canyon in about a mile. The peak now falls within the expanded San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. Reaching the summit requires a strenuous hike of about 12 miles with 5,300 feet of elevation gain. Its name reflects the nearby city of Monrovia, itself named for William N. Monroe, and its runoff feeds the San Gabriel River watershed.
