By the mid-nineteenth century, increasing travel through the San Bernardino Mountains and Valley created a growing need for supply stations as travelers, merchants, families, and explorers used old Indian trails and logging roads that were evolving into later highways and boulevards. Pioneers entering and leaving the mountains frequently used an access road first built to haul timber to construction sites in the San Bernardino Valley, and that trail later became Highway 38. The name Greenspot came from Greenspot Springs along Mill Creek northeast of this site, where in 1884 the Excelsior Water Co. dug a 650-foot tunnel to carry water to Mentone, a system still in use today. The original building here began as a blacksmith shop before becoming the Rocky Comfort Store in 1910. Cornelius and Ruthann Hodenfield bought the land and business in 1921, renamed it Hod's Place, installed Gilmore gasoline pumps, and began delivering groceries and dry goods to local residents. In 1927, Louis Stowells added the exterior stonework. During the Great Depression, the Hodenfield family sold the store in 1931 and returned to Iowa. The business passed through many owners over the years, including Mark and Ethyl Tyler, Sylvia and Clyde Parsons, Karl and Constance Knudsen, Leon and Alice Stafford, Chester Nordling, Virginia Miller, Glen Soffel, Charles Peters, and Ed and Virginia Adamczyk, and it also operated under the names Greenspot Trading Post, Hasty's Ranch Market, Greenspot Liquor, and The Greenspot Store. In 1992, Marlene Knox and Gary and Debby Jacinto purchased the store, and it has continued as the Greenspot Market, preserving its distinctive character while serving travelers near the Gateway to Big Bear.
