Popo Agie Wilderness is a federally protected wilderness in Wyoming’s Shoshone National Forest on the east side of the Continental Divide in the southern Wind River Range. First set aside in 1932 and given stronger protection in 1984, it remains largely undeveloped, with no roads or buildings and no motorized or mechanized travel. Its subalpine and alpine terrain rises from about 8,400 feet to high summits, including Wind River Peak, and contains more than 300 lakes and several Wind River tributaries. Known landmarks such as the Cirque of the Towers draw climbers and other visitors, while forests, trout waters, and varied wildlife add to its importance.
