Wheeler Mountain
Nature
1
Wheeler Mountain is a 13,690-foot summit on the Continental Divide in central Colorado’s Mosquito Range, one of the state’s 150 highest peaks. Its summit is in Summit County, while its slopes extend into Lake and Park counties, within Arapaho and Pike National Forests. Runoff from the mountain reaches Clinton Creek, Wheeler Lake and the Middle Fork South Platte River, and Monte Cristo Creek to the Blue River. The peak is especially striking for its steep relief, rising 1,970 feet above Clinton Creek in only half a mile. Its official name is recognized by the United States Board on Geographic Names, and its high elevation gives it a long, snowy alpine subarctic climate.
