Mount Cameron is a 14,238-foot summit in central Colorado’s Mosquito Range, east of the Continental Divide, on Pike National Forest land in Park County. Counted among Colorado’s fourteeners, it ranks as the county’s second-highest peak, the range’s third-highest, and the state’s eighteenth-highest by elevation. The mountain rises sharply above the headwaters of the Middle Fork South Platte River, gaining more than 2,500 feet in about a mile, and its alpine subarctic climate brings long snowy winters, cool to warm summers, and frequent summer thunderstorms. Its officially adopted name has uncertain origins, with traditions linking it either to Simon Cameron or General Robert Alexander Cameron.
