Grafton Notch State Park in western Maine centers on the mountain pass between Old Speck Mountain and Baldpate Mountain in the Mahoosuc Range. Maine began assembling the park in 1963, adding most of its land during the 1960s and finalizing its boundaries in 1977. Its significance lies especially in a landscape shaped by glaciation and erosion, with U-shaped valleys, gorges, an esker, erratics, gravel deposits, and exposed Devonian granite. Notable features include Screw Auger Falls, Mother Walker Falls, and Moose Cave. The park also supports hiking, fishing, hunting, picnicking, Appalachian Trail travel, ice climbing, birdwatching, and wildlife such as moose, black bear, bobcat, and deer.
