Gould Island Light served as a lighthouse on Gould Island in Narragansett Bay, guiding passing traffic from the island’s east coast. After concerns about the reliability of a private light maintained by the Old Colony Steamboat Company, the Lighthouse Board secured funding in 1885 for a federal station, and a tower, fog bell, and keeper’s house entered service in 1889. The location proved flawed because trees blocked the light from the south. A second light was added at the island’s southern tip in 1932, and the original was extinguished in 1947. Though the original structures were demolished in 1960 and a later replacement tower collapsed in 1988, the southern light remained in service.
