Angel Fire Resort, in the village of Angel Fire in northern New Mexico, opened in 1966 after the LeBus family turned former grazing land into an alpine resort. Along the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway, it became known for cold-weather recreation, with more than 500 acres of ski slopes and over 70 runs, including a trail recognized in the 1990s for one of New Mexico’s largest lift-serviced vertical drops. It also developed into a year-round destination with summer golf and mountain biking. After ownership changes, financial trouble led to bankruptcy in 1994 and a sale in 1995. Its strong Texas visitor ties remain a defining part of its identity.
