Stagg Tree
Nature
The Stagg Tree, officially the Amos Alonzo Stagg Tree, is a giant sequoia in Alder Creek Grove in California’s Sierra Nevada. Among the world’s largest trees by volume, it is also the tallest giant sequoia south of the Lincoln Tree in Sequoia National Park and has one of the biggest known footprints of any living giant sequoia. Believed to be more than 3,000 years old, it was first noticed in 1931, long known as the Day Tree, and renamed in 1960 for Amos Alonzo Stagg. Later events included the discovery of a hollow chamber near its top, its protection through a major conservation agreement, and its survival of the 2020 Castle Fire.
