Black Mountain Grove is one of the world’s largest giant sequoia groves, spread across Black Mountain in California’s Giant Sequoia National Monument, the Tule River Indian Reservation, and private land. Covering about 3,310 acres and 19.3 miles, it contains more than 500 large sequoias along with a diverse forest of pine, fir, oak, cedar, willow, and dogwood. Notable trees include Black Mountain Beauty, Patriarch II, the Blasted Mammoth, Flower Pot Tree, Snaggle-Top, and Twisted Harlequin. The grove became central to efforts to stop logging, helped shape protections for giant sequoias, and has also been repeatedly altered by major fires, including severe losses in 2017.
