Alder Creek Grove
Nature
Alder Creek Grove, a 785-acre giant sequoia grove in California’s western Sierra Nevada, contains 526 sequoias at least 6 feet in diameter and a diverse forest of trees, meadows, wetlands, and riparian woodland. It is known for remarkable trees including the Stagg Tree, among the world’s largest by volume, as well as the lost Waterfall and Window trees. After partial logging and development in the mid-20th century, a 2019 campaign secured major private holdings for permanent protection. The 2020 Castle Fire killed or severely damaged nearly half the grove’s large sequoias, prompting extensive restoration, replanting, and cultural burning to reduce risk and restore forest health.
