Mariposa Grove, near Wawona in southern Yosemite National Park, is the park’s largest giant sequoia grove, with several hundred mature trees, old-growth forest, and some of the world’s largest sequoias. First reached by non-native visitors in 1857, it was named by Galen Clark, whose 1858 cabin became the basis for the grove museum. Its history is closely tied to conservation, from the 1864 Yosemite Grant Act to later inclusion in Yosemite National Park. Tourism long shaped the grove through stagecoach tunnels, lodging, automobiles, and trams, while more recent management has emphasized fire, habitat restoration, and protection of ancient trees from climate-related threats.
