The Grizzly Giant, a giant sequoia in Yosemite National Park’s Mariposa Grove, is the oldest known tree in the grove at about 2,995 years old and has long stood as one of Yosemite’s defining symbols. Its immense trunk, weathered limbs, and survival through severe fires, storms, lightning, and a longstanding lean have made it a powerful example of endurance. From the 19th century onward, photographs and paintings of the tree helped convince skeptics that giant sequoias were real and built support for protecting Mariposa Grove. Its fame also drew prominent visitors, and its protection became part of Yosemite’s broader conservation story.
