A sequoia in Mariposa Grove still survives after a large tunnel was carved through it in 1895, and its bark grows inward as it attempts to heal the wound. Thought to have served as a lower elevation winter replacement for the better known Wawona Tunnel Tree, it became the second tunneled tree in the grove. The Wawona Tunnel Tree fell in 1969 after more than 75 years as a portal to the past. Though weakened, the California Tunnel Tree endures as a glimpse into early tourism promotion and transportation, and both tunneled trees helped publicize Mariposa Grove and support its inclusion in Yosemite National Park in 1906.
