The Grizzly Giant stands 209 ft. tall, with a circumference of 96 ft. and a base diameter of 28 ft. Its base bears blackened fire scars, and at an estimated 1,800 years old, it has lived through many fires in a place where fire has occurred on average every 5 to 20 years. Its top is missing, a condition common in elder sequoias and in trees with large fire scars, where loss of sapwood prevents water from moving from roots to crown and leaves a dead snag-top. Halfway up on the right, a large branch bends upward; at nearly 7 ft. in diameter, it is larger than the trunk of any nearby tree except another sequoia.
