Greatheart Mesa is a 7,405-foot sandstone summit in Zion National Park in southwestern Utah, north of Springdale. Formed of Navajo Sandstone, it stands out as a white-walled mesa topped by a ponderosa pine forest, giving it a distinctive appearance among Zion’s pale heights. Its name, officially adopted in 1935, came from Greatheart, the heroic guide in The Pilgrim’s Progress, reflecting the sense that climbing its white cliffs would require a stout heart. The mesa lies in a cold semi-arid climate with limited precipitation, and its runoff drains into North Creek, connecting it to the Virgin River and Zion’s broader canyon system.
