South Guardian Angel is a 7,140-foot white Navajo Sandstone summit in Zion National Park in southwestern Utah, rising from the park’s canyon country about 8 miles north-northwest of Springdale. Just south of North Guardian Angel, its nearest higher neighbor, it stands beside the Subway, a small, unusually shaped slot canyon known in this part of Zion’s backcountry. Runoff from the mountain drains into North Creek and then the Virgin River. The name was officially adopted in 1934 by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. The peak lies in a cold semi-arid climate with hot, dry conditions, under 10 inches of annual rainfall, light winter snowfall, and the most favorable seasons in spring and fall.
