Ludlam’s Beach Light, built in Sea Isle City in 1885 near Life Saving Station Number 33, was established after Charles K. Landis sought a light to reduce shipwrecks off Ludlam Island. Its distinctive L-shaped building carried a white light visible about ten nautical miles, later modified to show red to vessels nearing Townsend’s Inlet sandbar. Storm damage repeatedly threatened the station, beginning with severe erosion in 1889. After later improvements, fire and storm damage in 1923 and 1924 ended its service as an active lighthouse. The building was moved and used as a private residence, while a replacement beach tower also later disappeared, leaving only occasional traces of the original foundations.
