Cutler Park is a 772-acre state-owned nature preserve and recreation area along the Charles River around Needham, with sections extending into Dedham and along the Newton and Boston side of the river. It protects the largest remaining freshwater marsh on the middle Charles River, alongside forested land and Kendrick Pond. Trails cross boardwalks through the marsh and circle the pond, supporting walking, hiking, bird-watching, biking, skiing, fishing, and canoeing, with more than 100 bird species recorded. Its landscape was reshaped by flooding after the Silk Mill Dam in the 1890s and by later waterworks and soil removal for Boston’s Back Bay. Named in 1962 for State Senator Leslie B. Cutler, it is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.
