On January 26, 2020, a Sikorsky S-76B helicopter crashed on a hillside in Calabasas while flying from John Wayne Airport to Camarillo Airport, killing all nine people aboard, including Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, other passengers, and pilot Ara Zobayan. The group was traveling to a basketball game at Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy. Low clouds and fog forced the helicopter, which was operating under visual flight rules, to remain low and take an indirect route. After entering cloud near higher terrain, it descended rapidly and struck the hillside. Investigators concluded that the pilot continued into instrument meteorological conditions, became spatially disoriented, and lost control.
