Higby Mountain is an 892-foot traprock ridge east of Meriden in central Connecticut and part of the Metacomet Ridge, a basalt mountain chain running through the Connecticut River Valley. Its steep cliffline rises prominently above the Quinnipiac River valley, and its basalt ledges were formed by lava, faulting, and earthquakes near the end of the Triassic Period. This geology supports rare plant communities, uncommon species, and a noted raptor migration path. The mountain is also an important aquifer with several reservoirs and ponds, a popular hiking and recreation area along the Mattabesett Trail, and a focus of conservation efforts against development and quarrying pressure.
