Lamentation Mountain is a 720-foot basalt traprock ridge in central Connecticut, just north of Meriden and part of the larger Metacomet Ridge. Rising steeply above the city with prominent west-facing cliffs, it helps form one of the state’s most distinctive volcanic landscapes, linked to nearby peaks, lakes, and gaps. Created from lava flows laid down near the end of the Triassic Period and later tilted by faulting, the ridge supports unusual microclimates, rare plant communities, and migrating raptors.
