La Harpe's Council
History
At a Tawakoni village here, Commandant Bernard De La Harpe held the first peace council and alliance in Oklahoma between a European nation and Indian tribes during his first visit to the Arkansas River. On Sept. 10, 1719, he erected a post carved with the coat-of-arms of the French king. That date marked the beginning of French place names and trade activities in Oklahoma.
