On June 7, 1904, Harvey Logan, also known as Kid Curry and a member of Butch Cassidy's "Hole in the Wall" gang, attempted a train robbery near Parachute. When the westbound Denver & Rio Grande train made its 1:15 a.m. stop in Parachute, a man boarded and forced the engineer at gunpoint to continue to Streit Flats, about 3 miles west, where two accomplices joined him. The three forced the baggage master to open the baggage car and blew open the safe with dynamite, expecting to find gold, though historians never established that they did and many believed the gold had gone through on an earlier train. The outlaws then headed to the Colorado River, crossed it, mounted horses hidden on the south side, and rode toward Battlement Mesa, stealing fresh mounts along the way, while lawmen from Grand Junction and Parachute and several local ranchers formed a posse to pursue them. After crossing Battlement Mesa, the posse caught up with the robbers and exchanged fire with them on Mamm Creek east of here, but the outlaws escaped unharmed and continued to Divide Creek, where they stole more horses and rode east. On East Divide Creek, the posse overtook them again. Hidden behind rocks, the outlaws warned the pursuers to go back or get hurt, but the posse reached for their guns and a battle followed. One robber was heard to say he had been hit and was going to finish the job; after a final single shot, the posse found one man dead behind the rocks with chest and head wounds, the latter plainly self-inflicted. The other two outlaws, whose horses had been lost in the battle, fled on foot into the cedar trees along East Divide Creek and were never identified or seen again. The dead man was later positively identified by the Pinkerton Detective Agency as Harvey Logan, alias Kid Curry, and was taken to Glenwood Springs for burial near Doc Holliday's grave. Any money or gold taken in the robbery was never found or accounted for.
