Boston-born Royall Tyler wrote The Contrast, the first American drama performed in this country in 1787, and his novel The Algerine Captive presented the first Yankee types in American literature. He came to Guilford in 1791 and served as Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court for 7 years.
