Between 1934 and 1941, Companies 2770, 4737, and 764 of the Civilian Conservation Corp worked under the direction of the Nat'l Park Service, chiefly developing the then Grand Forks State Park, though camp SP-5 was located at Larimore, ND. The young men of these crews chose work during hard times, gained social, intellectual, and occupational growth, and sent part of their pay to their families, easing everyday life during the "dirty thirties." CCC projects reclaimed abused land, reforested millions of acres of over-cut and burned-off forests, and at Turtle River State Park created a popular and lasting recreation area whose work remains evident. At the peak of CCC operations in ND, 16 camps were located across the state near communities able to provide logistical support, and enduring projects in ND included the Int'l Peace Garden, Theodore Roosevelt Nat'l Park, and Fort Abraham Lincoln, Lake Metigoshe, and Turtle River State Parks.
