The Stevens–Coolidge Place in North Andover, Massachusetts, grew from a farm acquired by Helen Stevens Coolidge’s family in 1729 into a distinguished summer estate. From 1914 to 1962, Helen and her husband, diplomat John Gardner Coolidge, used it as their seasonal home. Between 1914 and 1918, architect Joseph Everett Chandler combined two late Federal farmhouses into the present Colonial Revival residence and designed formal and working gardens, including perennial, flower, rose, and kitchen gardens, along with a French-style potager and greenhouses. The house also preserves collections of Chinese porcelain, American furniture, and European decorative arts, and remains significant for its family history, architecture, and gardens.
