Byers Peak Wilderness is a protected mountain area in north central Colorado within the Arapaho National Forest. Established as a U.S. Wilderness Area in 1993, it covers 8,913 acres and takes its name from Byers Peak, the highest point in the area. The wilderness includes two glacial lakes, two summits above 12,500 feet, and about 23 miles of trails. Byers Peak was named for William N. Byers, the first mayor of Hot Sulphur Springs and founder of the Rocky Mountain News. The area is valued for its high-country scenery and its relatively undeveloped, protected character.
