Berthoud Pass crosses the Continental Divide between the South Platte and Colorado River drainages at an altitude of 11,314 feet. Colorado pioneer Capt. E.L. Berthoud discovered it on May 12, 1861. Berthoud and Jim Bridger surveyed it in July 1861. A toll road opened in 1874, and an improved highway opened in 1923.
