The U.S. Army of the Ohio, commanded by Major General Don Carlos Buell and including the divisions of Brigadier Generals Alex. McD. McCook, William Nelson, Thomas L. Crittenden, and Thomas J. Wood, reached Savannah, Tennessee, from Nashville on April 5, 1862. On Sunday, April 6, Nelson’s Division marched up the east side of the Tennessee River to a point opposite Pittsburg Landing, and at 5 P.M. Ammen’s Brigade crossed the river and helped repel the last Confederate attack on the Union lines. The rest of Nelson’s Division and Crittenden’s Division reached the field during Sunday night, and McCook’s Division arrived early Monday morning. Wagner’s Brigade of Wood’s Division arrived at 12 Noon and Garfield’s Brigade about 3 o’clock P.M., too late to take part in the battle. In the Monday attack on the Confederates, the Army of the Ohio held the left of the Union line, with McCook’s Division on the Corinth Road, Nelson’s Division on the left, and Crittenden’s Division in the center, and when Wood’s Division arrived it took position between McCook and Crittenden. The Confederates were driven back until about 4 P.M., when they retired from the field. The Army of the Ohio had 17,918 officers and men present for duty, including Wagner’s Brigade, and suffered 2,103 casualties: 241 killed, 1,807 wounded, and 55 missing.
