Confederate Second Corps of the Army of the Mississippi, commanded by Maj. Gen. Braxton Bragg and organized under divisions led by Brig. Gen. Daniel Ruggles and Brig. Gen. James W. Withers, formed the second line of battle and was deployed at 5 P.M., April 5, 1862, 800 yards behind the first line, with the 1st Division to the left of the Bark Road and the 2nd Division, except Gladden’s Brigade on Hardee’s right, to the right of the Bark Road. The corps advanced at 7 A.M. April 6, but before becoming engaged its brigades were separated and sent to different parts of the field, destroying the organization of the corps. Bragg commanded the Confederate right center until 2:30 P.M., when, learning of Gen. Johnston’s death, he took command of the right, leaving Gen. Ruggles in command at right center. Gen. Withers, with his 2nd and 3rd Brigades, was engaged on the extreme right Sunday and Monday. The corps had 16,279 officers and men present for duty and suffered losses of 553 killed, 2,441 wounded, and 634 missing, for a total of 3,626.
