Slover Mountain, once the tallest mountain in the San Bernardino Valley, stood in Colton as a striking landmark before 20th-century limestone mining reduced it to a hill. Rising to 1,184 feet, it was known to Native Americans as Tahualtapa, meaning “raven hill,” and to the Spanish as Cerrito Solo, or “little solitary hill,” reflecting its distinct appearance. Its current name honors Isaac Slover, a local 19th-century hunter who died in 1854 in Cajon Pass after suffering bear-inflicted injuries. The mountain also figured in local civic identity as the site of the Colton Liberty Flag, and it continues to shape community memory through a school that bears its name.
