On Stepney Green, Birdsey’s Plain Methodist Church, a Greek Revival-style church built by Hanford Hull in 1839, was one of the “twin” churches and the second Methodist church in Monroe. In 1973, the church closed and was sold to the orthodox Roman Catholic movement, where the traditional Latin Mass is celebrated as Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel. Nearby, the 1836 George Burritt House, home of George Burritt, brother of Isaac Burritt, who built a general store across the street north of the Baptist Church in the 1940’s, was later sold and became the Stepney Methodist Church parsonage. In 1973, the orthodox Roman Catholic movement bought the house for use as a convent for the Dominican Sisters of Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel.
