A store stood on this site in Horseneck by 1798. The brick building was erected in 1819 by Nath. Douglass, a turnpike promoter with I. Crane, and it became the first Caldwell (Franklin) post office, with J. Hudson as P.M. It remained a major trading and polling place through the 19th century. From 1904 it served as the council chamber of the new borough. Purchased in 1915, it was remodeled to include the fire dept., police, and finally a jail before it was razed in 1968.
