Trolley tracks uncovered during a 2008 renovation of Stoughton Square are believed to have belonged to the former Blue Hill Street Railway, the second of four street railways that once served Stoughton. The company was chartered on July 21, 1899. Service was inaugurated from Stoughton to Ponkapoag via Cobbs Corner and Canton Center on November 18, 1889, and the route was later extended from Ponkapoag to Mattapan Square on August 15, 1903. In Stoughton, the line from Cobbs Corner went up Canton Street to Porter Street, where it connected to the Brockton division of the Old Colony Street Railway, which had been operating in Stoughton since 1895. The trolley car shown was on the Stoughton, Randolph and Holbrook Line, which operated from January 1901 through 1918. Service over that route was reestablished on August 24, 1919, and operated as the Bristol and Norfolk Street Railway, also known as the Glen Echo Lake Route, until July 7, 1923. The trolley car in the picture was car number 8, a ten bench open car used for summer service.
