Hobart was named in honor of Garret A. Hobart, the 24th Vice President of the United States, and was the first town in Oklahoma to adopt a city flower, the iris. On August 6, 1976, the town marked its 75th anniversary with a birthday gift from its people in appreciation of its pioneers, the courageous men and women who left the security of their homes in established communities to build new lives in the new country created by the Great Land Lottery of 1901. Their sacrifices, hardships, and work helped carve an enduring society out of the raw prairie, in connection with Kiowa County's Diamond Jubilee and the American Revolution Bicentennial.
