Basin and Range National Monument is a protected expanse of about 704,000 acres in southeastern Nevada, spanning remote mountains, broad valleys, and undeveloped desert in Lincoln and Nye counties. Created on July 10, 2015, under the Antiquities Act, it preserves a landscape valued not only for its stark basin-and-range scenery but also for geological, ecological, cultural, historical, archaeological, seismological, paleoecological, and paleoclimatological importance. The area includes notable ranges and narrows, contains Native American rock art about 4,000 years old, and includes Michael Heizer's City. Its designation protected existing uses while also stirring political debate, including over a proposed Yucca Mountain rail route.
