City is Michael Heizer’s immense land artwork in Nevada’s remote Garden Valley, built from local earth, rock, sand, and concrete at a scale larger than a mile long and more than a quarter-mile wide. Begun in 1972 and completed in 2022 after fifty years of work, it consists of five phases of massive architectural forms that merge ideas from ancient monuments, minimalism, industrial technology, and prehistoric building traditions. Its preservation became part of a broader effort to protect the surrounding desert from major development, and it now remains tightly controlled as both a public destination and a protected landscape.
