Milwaukee Peak
Nature
Milwaukee Peak is a 13,522-foot mountain on the crest of Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Range, where its summit marks the boundary between the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness and Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Rising steeply above the San Luis Valley, it feeds upper tributaries on both its eastern and western slopes, with all runoff descending toward the valley. The peak’s sharp local relief, including a 1,777-foot rise above Upper Sand Creek Lake in just 0.75 mile, gives it a striking prominence. Its high elevation creates an alpine climate of snowy winters, cool to warm summers, and sudden late-summer monsoon storms that shape travel in this rugged landscape.
