Tijeras Peak is a 13,610-foot mountain in southern Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Range, standing within the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness on the boundary between Great Sand Dunes National Preserve and Rio Grande National Forest. The summit is the highest point in Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, giving it special significance within that landscape. Its name comes from the Spanish word for scissors, referring to the mountain’s distinctive double-pronged rocky tip. A historical variant, Tiseras Peak, was also recorded, while the form Tijeras Peak appears from 1970.
