Pico Aislado is a 13,611-foot mountain in Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Range, within the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness and Rio Grande National Forest. Though not among the state’s very highest summits, it is notable for its steep rise, climbing about 2,400 feet above Deadman Creek in just one mile and giving it a strong local presence. Its runoff flows west through Deadman and Cottonwood creeks toward the San Luis Valley. The Spanish name, meaning “Isolated Peak,” reflects its remote setting; it was officially adopted in 1972 after a suggestion by the Colorado Mountain Club. The mountain lies in an alpine subarctic climate with snowy winters and frequent summer thunderstorms.
